Eagles QB Vick was proved to be innocent

The Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Michael Vick will report for the team’s training camp on time and play his backup role for starter Kevin Kolb just as scheduled, because the league announced that investigation resulted in no evidence of Vick shooting at his 30th birthday party. A lot of speculations were ended by the announcement, and Vick will stay with the Eagles for one another season, neither to be released nor to be traded.

Now we may have a look back on how Vick got involved into the trouble. He went to a restaurant in Virginia Beach to celebrate his 30th birthday with a group of friends in Brett Favre jerseys and allegedly left the scene before a shooting happened out site the restaurant. What made him more like suspect was that the man in Saints jersey being shot was Vick’s co-defendant in the dogfighting case. The well-known case put Vick in jail for 18 months and led to a long suspension from the NFL.

As local police made it clear that Vick was not the shooter, the quarterback does not have to face any arrest now and the league will neither punish him with a suspension, which was expected by many people when Vick was suspected to be the shooter. The Eagles, who have always been insisting that they would not release Vick, now proved that they were right.

Ravens showed intention to win title by signing QB Bulger

The former St. Louis Rams starting quarterback Marc Bulger was signed by the Baltimore Ravens last week as an unrestricted free agent. While it was taken as addition of a more threatening weapon, adding such an experienced veteran quarterback also showed the Ravens’ intention to win a title in the new season.

Such conclusion was supported by another report on Ravens’ plan to use Bulger as a backup for Joe Flacco. Just think if the Vikings quarterback in No.4 Brett Favre jersey will return to backup Tarvaris Jackson, what a team the Vikings will be. The veteran will not only help the younger quarterback to improve but also offers the team a great insurance.

"I don't want to be the guy that comes in here and thinks I know it all and put too much on him," Bulger, wearing his favorite Archie Manning jersey, said on a conference call on July 15. "I'm going to let Joe let me know how much input he wants me to give.”

At age 33, Bulger knows well he may have less strong arm than a younger quarterback, so he is glad to be paid $3.8 million to backup a talented young starter. He was never a Favre style of quarterback and always knows where he should be at different times.

Titans RB Johnson expects contract to be done before training camp

The Tennessee Titans running back Chris Johnson is still waiting for a result of the contract negotiation between his agent and the team. But it seems that the talks have not been going on well as Johnson told reporters that he still had no idea of what he could get in the new season, but he expected that everything would be finalized by the time of training camp.

“I’m letting my agent and the team handle that. Right now we’re at a standstill, and hopefully when camp starts we’ll have an outcome,” Johnson said when attending an ESPY event on Wednesday night to receive the award of Best Breakthrough Athlete. Rushing for 2,006 yards last season, Johnson thought he deserved a new long-term contract that would pay him at least $30 million in guaranteed money. But the Titans did not managed to enter the post season although they improved a lot in the second half of the 2009 season, so it’s unlikely for them to give players a significant salary raise before they lead the team further into the playoffs.

During the ESPN event, Johnson also denied the reports of his plan to put on New Orleans Saints jersey if no deal was going to be done by the time of training camp. He said that he would always be with his teammates when the team does something.

Steelers veteran CB Townsend hopes to play more football

Having played for the same team Pittsburgh Steelers for 12 years, veteran cornerback Deshea Townsend still believes that he would be able to play for a few more years with the team before he retires as a Steeler. At age 34, he is at least much younger than Brett Favre, who is still likely to put on Vikings jersey as a starting quarterback.

"I did kind of expect to be back, just to add some depth at the position," Townsend told the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review. "They know there's a player out there they don't really have to teach the system, that can come in and play. .. Pittsburgh is home. You always want to be where you started."

As an unrestricted free agent, Townsend is still waiting for a call from the Steelers to ask him back. He continues training and plans to report for the training camp. Does he have a plan B? Surely he has. Townsend used to tell reporters that he wanted to be next Kevin Colbert and work as a scout one day.

Jets CB Revis will lose big money if he holds out

The New York Jets cornerback Darrelle Revis was reported last week to have plan of sitting out the team’s training camp if the Jets do not reach a decision on his contract extension. However, if he really insists on doing that, he is going to lose about $20 million on bonus money, which was scheduled to be paid in 2011 and 2012 if he stays with the team all the time.

The Jets training camp is planned to open on Aug. 10, and Revis has been making effort to receive a new contract extending his current rookie contract. Other reports pointed out that Revis will have the right to ask for a considerable contract extension after the fourth season of his current deal. By then, the Jets will have to buy back the final two years at base salaries of $5 million in 2011 and $15 million in 2012.

Being drafted by the Jets in 2007 as a first-round pick, Revis is just entering his fourth career season, and he may have to end his vacation early to prepare for the upcoming season. I guess he will finally take off his favorite Brett Favre jersey and report for the training camp on August, 10. After all, who would like to turn down $20 million?
